Are Dental Implants for You?

Are dental implants for you? Many people today are finding themselves asking this question because of past problems they have had with other dental work such as with dentures, bridges or crowns. Or it may be that they are just looking to replace missing teeth and are aware of the revolutionary way in which dental implants can restore a mouth.

There are many things that each person must take into consideration when asking the question, “Are dental implants for me?

What is not working about the current dental work that you have had done (i.e. bridges, dentures, etc)? Have you had problems with your ability to speak and eat? Have you had dentures installed or bridgework done and you are noticing that your jaw bone seems to be deteriorating or receding? Are your teeth overly sensitive and difficult to chew on? Are you looking to improve the cosmetic appearance of your jaw structure and gum line and give your mouth a more “filled out look?”

If you find yourself still asking, are dental implants right for you, then there are also things that you may need to know about the dental implant procedure. First off all, note that dental implants are an invasive surgical procedure.

There are also specific health issues with your mouth that your oral and maxillofacial surgeon will need to take into account when asking them self if dental implants are right for you. Primarily, what is your dental health like? How is the quality of your jawbone and will the jaw heal effectively and quickly when the implant is placed? What are your oral hygiene habits like and will you be able to properly care for the dental implant as they will require special attention.

There is an extended recovery time that is associated with dental implant treatment as well. Often times, fitting a dental implant will take your oral and maxillofacial surgeon at least 2 visits to complete the procedure. During the first procedure the oral and maxillofacial surgeon will place the dental implant into your jaw bone.

The implant anchor that is placed will require 3 to 6 months of healing depending on the patient and their jaw bone. Until the implant has fused with the bone a temporary replacement tooth will be fitted.

During the healing time a permanent tooth will be made by a technician. Once the implant has permanently fused with the bone, the new tooth will be fitted.
